Private Student Loans

I would like to consolidate my private student loans, but do not want to be subject to the pitfalls of these attractive offers as "Consolidate now and get a check for $ 1,000.00." I read the fine print of all the mail I get offers but I do not trust any of them enough to pursue them. I have about 40k to consolidate and will return to school in January to add a little more than a thousand. Has anyone already consolidated and has a good experience? I would go to Sallie Mae as my repairman. Please note that these are private loans, not federal. Thank you in advance!
