Credit cards?? I never want or need to request a credit card in my life. However, my fiance and I plan to buy an apartment in the next 6-12 months and realize I'll need my credit improove (apparently never made any money is a bad thing).
My question is what is the best and surest way to establish credit, credit cards are used as a complement to debit cards and credit if you are on your credit card will not earn you interest? I know I look a bit thick but honestly do not have the slightest idea of these things!
I do not know a single credit card that earns you interest on a credit balance. This does not mean there is none. Good luck finding one, but I'm not sure it matters much to establish creditworthiness.
Before lending money to creditors, they need to be assured that funds will be refunded. In other words, the potential borrower is creditworthy?
How to establish credit
Start by opening individual savings and checking accounts in your name. Over time, your deposits, withdrawals and transfers to show that you can manage money responsibly.
Applying for a loan is another option, but be aware that this method of establishing a credit history will cost, since loans require the payment of interest.
You can take a bank loan guaranteed by the funds you have on deposit or by items you own, like a car. You can also ask a friend or relative who has good credit to cosign a loan, which means he or she shares responsibility for the loan with you.
You can also ask shops and credit cards for gasoline, which are generally easier to obtain than major credit cards. Before applying for a credit, however, make sure you understand the terms. For example, how long is the grace period or time that you must pay the current balance in full before finance charges are added? Is there an annual fee or other costs related to credit? If you think you carry a balance, you need to know how finance charges are calculated.
Patience is important in this process. It takes time to establish a credit and a record of consistency in payments to demonstrate your creditworthiness. And it is better to go slowly and develop a strong credit record than to apply too many credit cards or a loan that is greater than you can handle.
Start slow, be cautious, keep track of your debts and pay in time. Above all, remember that credit actually represents real money and must be repaid with interest.
As long as you pay on your cards on time every month to improve your score. It's even better if you pay monthly.
