How to Audition Vs How not Hearing Many players are wondering what the "rules" are for the hearings. Some believe that there are hidden needs or standards that must be met. The truth is that hearing is a fairly straight-forward, and there are some simple rules to follow.
First, here are some things you should do:
1. Dress the part - Before going to the hearing, you must know who your character, and found a bit of character. So when you go to the hearing that you want to look more closely at the part that you can. If you know you are auditioning for "Computer Nerd", then you probably want to look like, not like a gangster rapper hip hop. That does not mean you have to dress exactly like the part in the script reads, because no one welcomes this guy who comes dressed as a fireman carrying a hatchet, but you should try to get closer.
2. Know your lines - in most cases you will receive the sides (script pages casting directors want to see done.). Always know the lines cold when you go in. The more you read the lines on the page, minus the casting director will see your talent and you're less likely to get the reminder. " Keep the sides (script) in your hands. casting directors do not like actors who forget their lines and have no reference point. The "I can start?" Is usually the kiss of death.
3. Be professional - This means arriving on time or earlier, be courteous to people around you, deliver your hearing, and leave promptly. It's true! Say your lines and get the hell out of the room! Do not try to stay and get chatting with the producers. Believe me, if you want to do more, they prevent you from leaving.
4. Make sure you have the right materials - When you go on auditions, always bring your headshot (one color) and resume. In fact, you need to make some copies, and more cases are needed. Also, make sure your resume is your site to use (you have one, right?) So the casting director to know more about you and see your work.
Now, here are some things you should not do:
1. Do not be "too much character - If you're auditioning for the role of a superhero, does not show up in the cape and tights. Of course, you want to show you can play the game, but you do not want to overdo it. You simply want to demonstrate your ability so that the casting director can see that you can play the role well.
2. Do not be rude or discourteous - Treat everyone with respect and admiration, and you will see that this whole process is much more fun. This includes other actors in the lobby - sure, they are competing with you for the role, but that does not mean you can not be nice to them. The Golden Rule ("Treat others as you want to be treated.") Applies here. Keep in mind that some players prefer to keep to themselves, they focus on the business at hand. Not everyone wants to hear stories about the dating life or how to take better care of your cat!
3. Do not be late - Casting sessions operate on very tight schedules. They expect to be on time, so make sure you are.
4. Do not complain about anything - Casting sessions are not glamorous. They are at the end, the chairs can be uncomfortable, parking may be problematic, etc. There are certainly many things to complain but do not. Take the high road. Find something to admire instead.
And finally, and most importantly, have fun! Remember, this is your profession. Hearings are part of this profession, and you better reach them, the more work you book.
