Audit Director

Audit DirectorMusical Auditions: Dealing with the recall system

It is very rare for a singer, dancer or actor to be cast in a role on the strength of their first hearing. Because there are literally thousands of performers seeking work, most musicals have a system of reminders that can be quite long. A British customer had to endure 9 recalls at her own expense before she got the role. This article takes you through the various stages of the audition process, and describes how a coach can support performers through the recall system.

I suppose you lived or sidestepped the preliminary stage of the audition process (the cattle call) and have successfully completed the first private hearing.

You know they have been a reminder that the casting director thinks you fit the part and are at the appropriate level for production. They want to know more about you and how you treat the material in the show. They usually give you music and script for the role they want you to audition.

If the production company have not given any music or instructions, but asked you to sing your own choice for them again, my opinion is not to take new songs "to show something different "but to polish the same songs that were sung in the first hearing. I also recommend wearing the same outfit. This is the song, performance and the clothes that you recall, so why take the risk of change your mind?

During a coaching session for auditions, we focus on the song, the character and history - what is the package that we sell? This technique, used for hearings to begin your own choice of song, can be applied by the recall. We'll explore the songs the group has provided casting, identify style elements of the series and incorporated into the song (and voice). We will also classify the personality traits of character, and test different versions of scenes and songs to bring coherence to both singing and speaking.

This is the first major obstacle. But the second recall is different again. Right now, you will probably given not only music but also clues or advice on how the company wants the character to be played. In coaching for the second reminder, you can experiment with different readings of the song is based on different subtexts. It is essential during the second reminder that the artist gives a clear reading, but may still remain sufficiently flexible to change, if necessary.

The third recall is usually something more flexible. You know now that you're at the right level and appropriate for the role. Often, in the third recall of the director and musical director to work with you in detail. It's time to listen and experiment! During the hearings of other players will be brought to "match" a potential thawing. My coaching sessions for the third recall are much more targeted, using information and advice given by the group.

For example, working on auditions for spring musical awakening recently, one of my clients was looking for three different roles and have received very specific instructions from the Administration for three songs. We worked on more aggression and bite in the consonants for one character, a more fluid, lyrical feel with some changes in style of music for the second, and a hypnotic, sexually dominant feel for the third.

Another client worked on recalls for Mamma Mia and was for two of the three great ladies. We worked on the dialogue for each character, identifying and shaping the differences between the two roles, finding the essence of their way of speaking, speed of delivery, range and characterization. Then we realized these differences in the songs to give a complete package for each of the identifiable tracks.

When you arrive at the fourth, fifth or sixth recall, you have a mind relationship.
