If there is a charge, the ATM should be mentioned that, you have to accept before you show the balance in your (or mini-statement). But you can always check online for free. It's up to you to keep track of your balance, including outstanding checks / debit and do not spend deposits before they clear. Thus, a balance ATM can not tell you if you are about to enter an overdraft position.
