Air Audit

Air AuditWnt to an energy audit on my house, what is the best way to find projects and flow of air around the doors?

and windows and other places where leaks can occur?

There are two best ways and an easy way.

Best "as is" is to check with your local power company because many of them will do energy audits of professional quality to help their customers save energy.

"The best way of two" is a ride or rent one of these doors that has a fan set to blow air outside. They pressurize the house and it becomes clear how air leaks around windows and doors.

How common sense is to wait for a windy day. Then take a small candle (or wet finger) and run on the perimeter of doors and windows. When you click on an area of drafts flame could distract or your finger will feel the cold. No fancy equipment needed or prearranged and you will get most places in the draft this way.

Once you set them to repeat the test and see if you got all.

I support the lighter ... or use a candle .. feathers also work ... but lighter or candle show much more deflection

Cigar smoke

The flames and smoke still reveal a project, but make more doors and windows. outlets, light switches, plumbing, dryer and stove vents and behind your refrigerator, where the water line passes under the floor!

The help of a candle flame is a common practice for this. But there are also special devices that make a non-toxic smoke the stuff you can use. You can find it in your home improvement stores. You can also hire someone to do it for you, and provide all equipment necessary for that.

Hold a lighter on the edges ... if the flame flickers ... the air is getting through.

Hold a pen in the seam around windows and doors. You will see the movement if there is no draft. You can also use a candle but there is a security risk of catching your curtains on fire.

I would use an incense stick instead of a flame to check for projects, especially around the curtains at the windows and doors. and on your gates, you can use a ticket or a piece of paper "slip" through the gasket or seal. if it draws no resistance or slips or moves on its own, the seal needs adjustment or replacement. luck.

Bed incense sticks work well.

With a candle flame.
